Instructor and Leader Award Training
HikeandClimb provides training for individuals and clubs that are working towards the Lowland Leader, Rock Climbing Instructor, Climbing Wall Instructor and Mountain Leader Award.
Training is available in Dublin and Wicklow primarily, but I will travel to other areas for group bookings.
All NGB training courses and assessments are run in a friendly, inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere by Ambrose Flynn.

Lowland Leader Award Training
Lowland Leader Award is a Mountaineering Ireland award for those that would like to lead groups on lowland and woodland trails.
The awards focuses on leadership skills, planning, map (route finding), equipment, risk assessment, access and the environment.
The LLA training runs over two days and involving practical learning out on the trails in a friendly atmosphere.
Cost: €200 p/person
Venue: Wicklow Mountains, but will travel to other areas for group bookings.
Lowland Leader Assessment
Lowland Leader Assessment is a two day assessment on the leadership skills and knowledge base of the LLA candidate.
LLA candidates can be expected to be assessed on leading a group on waymarked trails, their knowledge base, decision making, risk management, people skills and leadership.
The Lowland Leader assessment is carried out in a fair, balanced, friendly and ideally fun atmosphere.
Cost: €200 p/person
Venue: Wicklow Mountains, but will travel to other areas for group bookings.
Mountain Leader Award Training
Mountain Leader Award is a Mountaineering Ireland certified award for those that would like to lead groups into the Irish and UK mountains. The awards focuses on advanced navigation techniques, a deep dive into contour interpretation, managing a group over mountain terrain, wild camping, flora and fauna and emergency rope skills.
The Mountain Leader Training is broken into ML1 and ML2 training.
The ML1 training is a two day module focusing on night navigation, route planning, risk management, emergency rope skills.
The ML2 training is a three day module focusing on wild camping logistics, night navigation, a deep dive into contour interpretation and movement on steep ground.
Cost: €220 – €270/person
Venue: Wicklow Mountains, but will travel to other areas for group bookings.
Rock Climbing Instructor Training
Rock Climbing Instructor Training is suitable for individuals and clubs with rock climbing experience that want to work towards managing beginners at a single pitch crag or artificial climbing structure.
The RCI Award Training runs over three days and introduces the candidate to technical, practical and real world scenarios that one can expect to encounter when instructing beginners.
Training may take place in Dublin or Wicklow with a one day visit to a suitable indoor climbing venue.
Cost: €250 p/person
Venue: Dublin and Wicklow but will travel to other areas for group bookings.
Rock Climbing Instructor Assessment
Rock Climbing Instructor Assessment runs over two consecutive days split between an outdoor venue and an indoor venue.
Those applying to take part in the assessment must have met the pre-assessment criteria as outlined – https://hikeandclimb.ie/rock-climbing-instructor-assessment/
The assessment generally takes place in Dalkey Quarry (or a suitable Wicklow crag) and Awesome Walls Dublin (or similar).
Cost: €250 p/person
Climbing Wall Instructor Training
Climbing Wall Instructor Training runs over two days and trains candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers at indoor climbing walls and outdoor artificial climbing structures. The training is suitable for those working at indoor bouldering walls and indoor roped climbing walls.
Training takes place at a suitable indoor climbing venue and runs over a minimum of 16 hours. Candidates will be trained in group management, top-rope supervision and bouldering wall supervision. This award does not cover teaching lead climbing or outdoor rock climbing.
Cost: €200 p/person
Venue: Dublin, but will travel to other walls for group bookings.
Climbing Wall Instructor Assessment
Climbing Wall Instructor Assessment runs over one day at a suitable indoor climbing venue. The assessment is run in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
When we meet we will have an introduction, an outline of the schedule and then you will be asked to run various indoor climbing group scenarios.
During the consolidation period the candidates will have observed many such climbing sessions being carried out, therefore those attending the assessment should feel relaxed and comfortable.
Cost: €150 p/person
Venue: Dublin, but will travel to other walls for group bookings.
