Lowland Leader Assessment
The Lowland Leader Assessment is for LLA candidates that have completed the training and completed the consolidation requirements.
The requirements to attend the Lowland Leader Assessment are as follows.
Be registered on the LLA Scheme – https://www.mountaineering.ie/awardreg/?aid=30
Be a current member of Mountaineering Ireland – https://www.mountaineering.ie/members/registration/
Have completed the LLA training
Have completed the minimum requirements of 20 logged hikes
Have attended the two day Remote Emergency Care course
The Assessment
The LLA is run over two consecutive days generally starting from 9:30am and finishing 4pm each day.
During the assessment candidates will take a leadership role on a real hike on waymarked trails. They will be assessed on decision making, route planning, risk assessment, knowledge base (flora/fauna etc), awareness of access, leave no trace principals and of course leadership skills.
Candidates will also receive a home paper several weeks before the assessment that will prepare them and test their knowledge.
The Result
On completion of the assessment candidates will receive one of the following results.
Pass – Deferral on a specific aspect of the syllabus – Fail – or ‘No Show’
If the result is a pass the candidate is now a lowland leader, is recognised by Mountaineering Ireland as such and can avail of insurance through Mountain Training.
If the result is a ‘deferral’ the candidate will be requested to take a few months and practice a specific aspect of the syllabus. They will then return when ready and be reassess on that specific aspect.
If a candidate fails they will received constructive feedback and will have to take the assessment in due course.
